Sight Word Candy Land

I don’t know about your kids – but mine are obsessed with Candy Land. I, however, am not a huge fan of the never ending game. But, I love my boys and spending time playing a game as a whole family is something I really value. Family games are one of my best childhood memories!

Enter my idea to change up Candy Land into something a little more challenging: Sight Word Candy Land! And, it was indeed a hit with Micah – he loves showing off his reading skills. Thing 2 is a little young yet, but he did know some of the words. Because it is Candy Land younger kids who aren’t learning sight words of reading can still use the colors to move their game piece.

The following sets are grouped according the Dolch lists for each grade. There are also some blank cards included in each set so you can add other words your kids are learning.

But wait – there’s more {to come}! Check back with me next week for Addition & Subtraction Fact Candy Land Cards. Micah is cruising along in MUS Alpha and Addition Candy Land Cards would really help him commit those math facts to memory!

And….because, I have to keep you interested, right? :-) I’ll even whip up some multiplication facts cards too for those who have older kids (cause we’ll need them in a year or two ourselves).

DIY Play Dough {Pintrest Love}

This is my favorite Pintrest project yet! I have made and played with several different homemade play doughs…but none have been as silky smooth as this one we made this last week! SO SMOOTH!!!

Here it is! And it’s NO COOK – which is great for people like me who have no patience. :-)

Mix these together in large bowl:
2 C flour
1/2 C Salt
2 TBSP Cream of Tartar
2 TBSP Canola (or vegetable) Oil

Heat in Microwave 3min (or to boiling):
2 C Water with a packet of Cool-aid mixed in

(Note: do NOT add the cool-aid after the water is boiling…Super Fizz-Explosion! lol)

Now, add the 2 C boiling colored water to the bowl of flour etc and mix up till incorporated. It’ll be very lumpy and hot. Let it cool off for a while (5-10 minutes). Dump it on the counter and knead, knead, knead. You’ll get out all the lumps and the color will be smooth throughout!

One batch makes quite a bit of play dough. I made 3 batches, each in a different color. I had enough to split each batch in 1/2 so I could leave some home and store some in my Sunday School classroom. The boys have played with it every day for over a week – best play dough ever! It is so, so smooth. no salty texture or residue on your hands at all. Which I love. And it is super soft and easy to play with for little hands.

Homemade Watercolors {Pintrest Love}

wpid-IMG_0611-2012-09-12-09-56.jpg
You know all those pins? Well, I have hundreds of them just sitting around, waiting. Waiting for me to actually do something with all that creative DIY awesomeness. So, I finally gathered some supplies and made some homemade watercolors! I also made finger paints for my Sunday School class (more on that later).
wpid-IMG_0598-2012-09-12-09-56.jpg
Micah helped me mix up the colors, but it was pretty hard to mix (it begins to set up pretty fast!), so I had to get it started for him.
wpid-IMG_0608-2012-09-12-09-56.jpg
I let the paint set for 2 days (48 hours-ish). The boys liked using our new paints! The paints were a little hard to work with because they absorbed the water extremely fast. So, don’t expect them to work like your regular store-bought Crayola water paints.

I think it was a fun endeavor! The colors were really vibrant (we used Wilton gel colors).

DIY Watercolor Recipe!
(Note: I used a 2-cup measuring cup to mix in, remember the vinegar & baking soda will fizz up – less than a 2-cup container might overflow!)

4 TBSP Baking Soda
2 TBSP White Vinegar
Mix the baking soda and vinegar until the fizzing stops and the baking soda is dissolved.

Now add:
1/2 tps Karo Syrup
2 TBSP Corn Starch

Now…Mix well, until everything is dissolved. It’ll be a odd consistency – stiff, yet still a liquid. {I am no chemist, but it sure was crazy-cool!}

I purchased 2 (full size) 1/2 dozen muffin tins at the Dollar Tree. A DOUBLE batch of the above recipe filled all 12 muffin cups about 1/8 of the way, or so, plenty of paint for lots of water color projects – it doesn’t take much.

After you fill your containers, you can add food coloring: we use Wilton gels because they come in so many colors (not mixing required!), but regular food coloring would be fine too. You’ll want to mix it up with a popsicle stick – it is tough to stir!

Have fun!!!

M2M: Bird Feeders & Fun

We are REALLY enjoying our break. Well, I am – even if the boys are driving me nuts without the routine of school to fill up our morning.

IMG_0417

IMG_0419 We made some nifty bird feeders from 2 Liter Bottles. I found a kit at Joann’s in the “Kids Camp” isle. It came with paint and stickers and a screw-on contraption of plug the bottle filled with seed and let just enough come out for the birds to eat.

Only problem is I keep having to chase the darn squirrels away from them! I have no idea how to keep them from eating all our bird seed. So, suggestions welcome in this area, please!

IMG_0386 IMG_0388 The boys, and even The Geek, love Samson….but I think Thing Two is a little jealous…or Samson is jealous of Thing Two?  Every time he is on Daddy’s lap Samson comes up and tries to crowd him off! It is pretty funny.

IMG_0381 Samson thinks he is Spiderman…surprisingly STRONG screening in these apartments, lol.

We got a water bottle, the vet said to spray him if he is doing something we don’t want him to do) but he seems not to heed the water bottle. The Geek has suggested a Super Soaker, lol. I think that might boarder on abuse.

The boys having a good time dancing to some music. I love when they are getting along. Shortly after this photo the “hand holding” became more like squeezing until there was screaming, but hey, at least it started off sweetly.

We’ll be back to school on Monday. I have gotten SO MUCH done – and that feels good. Lots of prep work and organization. I even completed a Pinterest-inspired project (more on that later). Breaking and resting is important!

Moments 2 Remember: Break Style

Last week, and currently, we’re breaking from school. Last week my sister “Auntie Amy!” came to visit (which always a treat for all of us, especially the boys because she spoils them…they are her only nephews!) so here’s some fun photos of her visit.

555868_2593341647788_1682070172_1628612_2130807348_n My sister (left) and me (the scary one one the right)…a real pair, for sure. I think it is impossible for us to take a serious picture together. Impossible. :-)

One is a duck, and it is up for debate as to what the green one is – I say crocodile, Thing Two insists it is a dinosaur. I suppose either works.

IMG_0006 IMG_0007 I put her to work blowing up my solar system for the co-op classes I’m teaching this spring. Luckily, she’s got lots of hot air and was a quick worker. ;-)

IMG_0008 Just playing!

I’m working to ready the next phase for school. Got a sweet World Continents display up on the wall now and world animals, money, time, and measuring stations too…and I’m talking pictures and posting our K plan soon. :-) Getting excited and kind of nervous…feeling a little more “real” now that Thing One’s ready and headed for K level work.

God is good, and somehow even in our tiny apartment He’s enabled me to create a wonderful little schoolroom ( aka the dinning room) that the boys love and that really makes it look like I know what I’m doing – haha riiiiiiiight…
