Dishwashers, paint, and broken bones – oh my!

This week isn’t turning out to be as productive as I had hoped! Between almost 4 hours spent trying to install a dishwasher, and a 5 hour trip to the emergency room we’ve only got one coat of paint on one room.

Back to the emergency room – Thing One fell down the stairs trying to help carry a box of toys to bring to the new house. A box of toys he carried up and down the stair a hundred times. I guess in all the excitement he took them a bit too fast an lost his footing. A mother’s nightmare to see her baby falling head over heals down the stairs! Screaming ensured (for good reason!) and after ensuring there was not blood, we noticed a nice lump on the back of his head and his left arm hanging limply and painfully at his side. We figured he had dislocated his shoulder. Off to the emergency room…and to make a long story short…5 hours later we finally found out he had a broken collar bone!

The collar bone, as it turns out, is fairly common in kids because it is an easy bone to break. It will heal on it’s on too (in 4-6 weeks). So, Micah has a sling, and as of today (24 hours later), is feeling pretty much himself - other than some pain and a little swelling.

He also seems to have a more healthy respect for the stairs now. Maybe now he won’t play around on them anymore?! In a way this is a momentous occasion – our first broken bone! The first of many I am sure. Yesterday was scary for this mama, but I am so thankful it was something “normal.” The lump on his head has gone down too (the er doc wasn’t worried abou that anyway). He clearly is well enough to be back to his mostly normal self (minus the moving around all the time).

So, house preparations are a bit behind my ideal schedule, but we are safe and sound, minus a collar bone. And have a working dishwasher. The stove is still in progress.

Hey, he’s The Geek, not Bob the Builder. He can fix a computer issue just by walking in the room (seriously, he did it just this morning when my phone wouldn’t connect to the new wireless at the our house – it must be Super Geek Powers). But this handy man thing – well it will come, right?

Truth in the Tinsel Days 1-3

We’re using the new paper printable ornaments this year to go along with our Truth in the Tinsel Advent Devotions.

Here’s this year’s tree decorated {with what the cat hasn’t destroyed} from our Truth in the Tinsel crafts from last year. We enjoyed making the ornament crafts. Sadly, many have been lost to Sampson alreayd this year. He has a thing for glitter and cotton balls.

I can’t wait to add all our new creations!

A Husband who Colors

The Geek coloring with the boys. They wanted me to color with them, but I was so busy, then he stepped in and sat with them for quite a while. This is just one of the many ways in which my husband has blessed me these past couple weeks. His devotion to the boys and his support of my many endeavors is something only God could have orchestrated.

In the crazy business of the last few weeks I feel like I have been running around like a zombie preparing for my first notable festival appearance as a local artisan crafter. I found out about this event late, but decided to inquire anyway. They let me into the juried event (this is big – you have to be liked/picked/good to get in) two weeks prior – I know, I’m nuts. But this is a huge festival – it might make my teeny-tiny-business into an actual “small business.”

So, while I have been busy upping my inventory (aka crocheting like a mad woman) The Geek has been overwhelmingly supportive in my upcoming event. He has helped in every way imaginable, besides actually picking up a hook and yarn (which he even said he would do…if he actually knew how, lol).

Needless to say (as if my posting quota hasn’t pointed it out) we haven’t been following the summer plan I made for school – at all. I finally had to admit that we had too many things going on in June/July already: the Lavender Festival, family visits & a BLESSED anniversary getaway for 2 nights, then another craft fair, The Geek’s work trip to Denver, VBS, and 10 days of dog/house-sitting where we are literally having to move to another house…so school is just not going to fit! Not to say, of course,  there won’t be plenty of learning despite the empty pocket charts and workboxes! :-)   So much for my “year-round” plan. Ah – but isn’t this part of the beauty of homeschooling? Life changes at such a fast pace, but we can go right along with whatever it brings!

The Geek has been blessed to receive a different job within his company where he works “remotely,” which means: AT HOME! I can’t even begin to list the benefits this has brought us, and will bring us in months to come. For now, I’ll just say it has been a major blessing. The help he has been able to lend in helping with the boys while I run errands, make lists, preform the boring task of inventorying, and work on items to sell – has been…amazing…and more than I imagine many other husbands would ever do. Sometimes I laugh as I wonder how this anomaly that is my husband happened, but then I thank God that He gave me such a wonderful man to spend my life with.

A little sample of what I do!

So, think of me this weekend (in the 100 degree weather) as I try to sell my fiber creations at the Newport Washington Lavender Festival. I am both excited and nervous to get into such an awesome festival. Like most major festivals, even if you can only get in by being chosen, you still have to pay for your booth (is that fair? I mean – they did pick me, right? lol), so we are…shall I say…invested…in this endeavor…thus my nervousness. So, BIG prayers please in this new adventure, friends!

And, just in case anyone is curious about what I make and sell, you can check out Bec’s Fiber Fetish on Facebook, or got to my website www.becsfiberfetish.com (FYI, Facebook is more up-to-date with my current designs). I’d love to know what you think about my work!

Family Job Charts

This is our Pinterest inspired new Family Job Chart System! It was a lot of work, but so fun to make, and now I feel really inspired to do my housework and all the other jobs I have). Hopefully the boys feel the same way. If this mornings excitement over “flipping” their job is any indication – then this is a sure hit to no more fuss over room cleaning! :-)

I used some scrapbooking paper to create 3”x3” cards and then stuck on a job to each card. Then I laminated and hole punched them. I got cork and hooks and…TA-DA:

When someone has completed their job, they flip the card over. This way mom and dad know the work is done – and it offers a little fun for chores!

I had originally planned to use push pins to put up the jobs, but the cork was too thin and the pins wouldn’t stay in well enough for me to not worry about them being all over the floor at some point. But I love the look of the cork background, so it all worked out in the end! A set of little clear 3M Hooks comes in 24 – the perfect amount for this little project. :-) Unless you have more than 4 charts…lol.

For the boys I hang morning jobs (feed Samson, brush teeth, make bed, etc.), and then later I put up their evening jobs (setting the table, feed Samson, clean bedroom, etc.). And of course if I have other things for them I hang those too (help with laundry, fold towel, clean up outside toys, dust, Mom’s Choice, etc). I made a zillion cards, I was having WAY too much fun cutting paper – it must be therapeutic! I cut a 3” x 6” piece and folded it in half so I could have design on the back too. (So, a 12”x12” paper gets you 8 cards, if you were wondering).

IMG_0413 I even did them for me and The Geek as well. I am keeping all of ours on the hooks , all the time. Just moving the ones for the day to the top. (I keep the boys’ cards in a old wipes container, sorted by type/boy in envelopes, on top of the fridge so they have only one card on each hook…less confusion for them.)

Now I feel so organized! It feels good to turn around a job I’ve completed – it really does! I am sure I have more than 6 jobs a day…but this helps me feel good about doing them all!

And now I can go turn around “Blog” for today – go me. :-)
